SPECIAL REPORTS ON RELIGIOUS BODIES

1906, 1916, 1926, 1936

The U.S. Bureau of the Census first reported on religion and religious bodies as part of the 1850 Decennial Census Report. Similar information on religion in the U.S. was later included in the 1860, 1870 and 1890 Census Reports. After 1890, this information was reported separately in four different reports, Religious Bodies, published in 1906, 1916, 1926 and 1936. These hardbound reprint editions of the four reports are printed on acid-free paper and have durable library-standard bindings.

1906. Part I: Summary and General Tables

This is a summary volume with explanatory text and tables concerned with religion in the continental United States, individual states, territories and cities. The Report covers a wide range of topics, such as the number of religious organizations, communicants and members (divided by gender), and documents the number of church edifices, their seating capacity and value and the debt on church property. The founding dates of many religious organizations, languages used when conducting services, work of denominations in domestic and foreign fields and the number of “colored organizations” practicing at this time are also included. 15 general tables and 9 diagrams.
