A
Reprint Edition of “Negro Statistics”
In 4 volumes
Published: June 1, 2005
All volumes printed on acid-free paper, in library bindings, several in enlarged formats. In the First Census, 1790, population data was provided
for “free white males” under 16 and over 16, “free white women,”
“all other free persons,” and slaves. Thus one cannot compute how
many Afro-Americans were in the United States at that time. To correct this
defect and others in subsequent Census Reports, a special series of reports
of “Negro Statistics” was created in the 20th Century. In the Introduction
to the first of these, John Cummings, Expert Special Agent, wrote: “Statistics
relating to the Negro population have been compiled in the present report from
publications, schedules, and unpublished manuscript tables of the Census Bureau,
covering the period of 125 years from 1790 to 1915. In part, therefore, the
tabulations of the report are compilations which assemble and reorganize material
previously published, and in part they are entirely original from records, manuscripts,
and schedules.”
Four special reports were published, as indicated above (listed in chronological
sequence according to the data rather than the date of publication). These reports
were never published as part of any of the Decennial Reports, although data
on Afro-Americans was of course included in every such report. Together though,
these four volumes provide an extensive picture of the composition of the Black
population of the United States for a period of 142 years, including geographical
distributions, sex composition, home ownership, agriculture, mortgage indebtedness,
etc. Long out of print, these reprints will fill gaps in many research collections.
