Report of the Joint Special Committee to Investigate Chinese Immigration
Statistical Review of Immigration 1820-1910 and Distribution of Immigrants 1850-1900
Published: June 1, 2005
Both volumes printed on acid-free paper, in library bindings.Report of the Joint Special Committee to Investigate Chinese Immigration. Report of the Committees of the Senate of the United States for the Second Session of the Forty-Fourth Congress, 1876-‘77.
The greatest historical event in transportation on the continent
occurred at Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869, as the Union Pacific tracks joined
those of the Central Pacific Railroad. The Irish crews had worked across the
country from the East and the Chinese crews had come from the West. At the famous
celebration, gold and silver spikes were driven into the ground, beer was served
all around and a lively party ensued with an endless stream of Irish songs.
The Chinese workers, or ‘coolies,’ as they were called, may have
been singing, but they were not invited to the party.
In 1876 the U.S. Senate resolved “That a committee of three Senators be
appointed to investigate the character, extent, and effect of Chinese immigration
to this country, with power to visit the Pacific coast for that purpose...and
to report to the next session of Congress.” The results of the investigation
were subsequently contained in a series of Congressional Reports which were
assembled into the present volume, long out of print, and now available again
for the first time in more than 100 years.

Statistical Review of Immigration 1820-1910 and Distribution of Immigrants 1850-1900.
This single volume contains two timeless reports on 90 years
of immigration into the United States, with enormous detail, in the one, about
the origins of the immigrants, their make-up by religious affiliation and trade,
and the years in which they arrived, and, in the other, where they settled.
Together the two contain an incredible wealth of information on the bulk of
the present population of the United States and/or their forebears. No mention
is made of Senator Bilbo.
