A section of United States summary tables is followed by sections for individual States, the District of Columbia and Territories and Possessions. Each state section includes the following eight tables:
1. Population of the State, urban and rural, from the earliest census to 1940;
2. Population of cities of 10,000 or more from the earliest census to 1940;
3. Area and population of counties, urban and rural: 1920 to 1940;
4. Population of counties by minor civil divisions: 1920 to 1940;
5. Population of incorporated places: 1940 and 1930;
6. Population of cities of 5,000 or more by wards: 1940;
7. Population of metropolitan districts: 1940 and 1930; and
8. Population of tracted cities by census tracts: 1940.
The section for the District of Columbia includes only the tables applicable to a city, and the sections for Territories and Possessions include only the first four to six tables. Each section includes a map of the area (State, Territory, etc.) by minor civil divisions and, where pertinent, maps of metropolitan districts and cities by census tracts.

Vol. 2. Characteristics of the Population. Sex, age, race, nativity, citizenship, country of birth of foreign-born white, school attendance, years of school completed, employment status, class of worker, major occupation group, and industry group, comprising the second series of population bulletins for the States. The several characteristics of the population listed in the title of the volume cited above are presented for each State and the District of Columbia in a series of tables arranged in three groups with data for the State; for counties, minor civil divisions, and places of 1000 to 100,000; and for cities of 100,000 or more, and metropolitan districts. A map of each metropolitan district is included.

Vol. 3. The Labor Force. Occupation, industry, employment, and income. Comprising the third series of population bulletins for the states. Part 1, the United States summary, contains 96 tables arranged under the following subject headings: Employment status and class of worker, occupation, wage or salary income in 1939, industry hours worked during week of March 24-30, 1940, months worked in 1939, and duration of unemployment. An appendix reproduces the schedule for enumeration of population and includes instructions to enumerators. The state sections in pts. 2-5 contain a lesser number of tables arranged under the same headings as given in the United States summary. The tables include numerous cross-tabulations and classifications according to such variables as age, color, sex, marital status, etc. These data are given for the state as a whole and for selected groups of cities, e.g., 100,000 inhabitants or more and 250,000 inhabitants or more. No county tabulations are given.
