From 1850 to 1940 an agriculture census was taken every 10 years and was published as part of the Decennial Census for the corresponding year. In 1909 Congress provided for a census of agriculture to be taken in 1915 and every 10 years thereafter, in addition to the enumerations to be done in conjunction with the decennial censuses. However, the onset of WW I prevented the taking of a 1915 census. Therefore the first mid‑decade agricultural census was taken in 1925, and agricultural censuses have been taken quinquennially ever since, being published either separately or as part of a decennial report.
